Chief Mate

(shipping) The second in command officer of a ship. Responsibilities include: the stability of the ship, loading the ship and all seamen and mates on board. Chief mate is the fifth level job of six towards becoming a capitan (ordinary seaman, able-bodied seaman, third mate, second mate, chief mate, captain).
