(insurance) In marine insurance, a deductible below which the insurer pays nothing, but at or above which, the insurer pays the entire amount of the loss up to the full sum insured. The franchise can be stated as either a percentage of the insured amount or as a set amount in the national currency of the insurance policy. The franchise effectively rules out very small claims.
