(customs, law) A legal claim for compensation by an individual who provides information to a government entity that results in the recovery of unpaid duties or “ill gotten gains.” Moietie is French for half, but can also mean either of two parts that may not be of equal size. Moiety claims in the US are often for 25 percent of the recovered amount.).
