A materials procurement planning system that uses the production plan for finished goods to determine what raw materials and component parts will be required to make the product. MRP involves planning for the collection, stocking and distribution of raw materials and component parts in the manufacturing process. MRP focuses on materials and inventories rather than personnel and equipment. MRP software is available from a number of firms. See MRP II, ERP.
