received for shipment bill of lading

(shipping) A bill of lading which confirms the receipt of goods by the carrier, but not their actual loading on board. See bill of lading.
(banking/letters of credit) A received for shipment bill of lading can be accepted under letters of credit only if this is expressly permitted in the letter of credit, or if the credit stipulates a document covering multimodal transport. Otherwise, “received for shipment” bills of lading must show an additional “On board” notation in order to be accepted as an ocean bill of lading. See bill of lading; ocean bill of lading.
