A small integrated circuit (microprocessor) connected to an antenna which can respond to an interrogating radio frequency (RF) signal with simple identifying information, or with more complex information depending on the size and complexity of the integrated circuit.

Unlike barcodes which assign a number (product number, sku number, etc.) to a product or package, RFID tags attach a unique electronic code to each product, carton of products, pallet or shipping container. RFID technology is at the core of sophisticated inventory management systems and is used in smart pallets and smart containers.
