Second Mate (2nd Mate)

(shipping) The third in command officer of a ship in the merchant marine. Responsibilities include: being in charge of bridge watch, plotting the ship’s course, following the plot, tracking the ship’s movement, using radar, radios, maps, safety and fire-fighting equipment, and maintaining small boats. The 2nd mate is often the navigator of a ship. Second mate is the fourth level job of six towards becoming a capitan (ordinary seaman, able-bodied seaman, third mate, second mate, chief mate, captain).
