Understanding duty avoidance and duty recovery (duty drawback)
When you ship orders internationally, duties and taxes are paid when goods are imported into a destination country. But what happens if those goods are returned or re-exported?
This article explains two key concepts that help reduce unnecessary costs in those situations: duty avoidance and duty recovery (also called duty drawback).
Duty avoidance
Duty avoidance allows FlavorCloud to avoid paying duplicate import duties and taxes when a returned order re-enters a country.
When a consumer returns an item, import duties and taxes would normally be charged again when that return shipment clears customs. However, because FlavorCloud has already paid those duties on the original shipment, our system automatically applies to waive (“avoid”) those charges wherever possible.
✅ For FlavorCloud merchants shipping from the U.S.:
Duty avoidance is already active by default. No extra setup is needed—our customs network and carrier integrations ensure that qualifying returns are cleared without repaying duplicate landed costs.
⚙️ For other origin countries:
Duty avoidance capabilities are expanding. FlavorCloud is progressively rolling out automation and coverage in additional regions (Canada, UK, EU, Australia).
Duty recovery (duty drawback)
Duty recovery—also called duty drawback in some circumstance—In certain circumstances, FlavorCloud can apply to get back duties or taxes you already paid on imported goods that are later returned.
This process can take time and paperwork, and it depends on each country’s rules. It’s a way to reclaim costs from returns that meet certain conditions.
⚠️ Duty recovery programs are complex and time-intensive, often requiring detailed documentation and government approval.
📞 To explore eligibility for duty recovery:
Contact your FlavorCloud representative or Customer Success Manager. They can help determine if your business qualifies and guide you through any required paperwork or coordination with local customs authorities.
Quick comparison
| Concept | When it happens | What it does | Automation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Duty avoidance | During customs clearance of returned goods | Prevents paying duties twice | ✅ Automatically applied for U.S. origin shipments |
| Duty recovery / drawback | After imported goods are returns | Refunds duties/taxes already paid | ⚙️ Manual process; contact your rep for eligibility |
Summary
FlavorCloud helps merchants reduce unnecessary landed costs by automatically applying duty avoidance for U.S. returns and supporting duty recovery discussions where eligible.
Both processes protect your margins and improve customer satisfaction by reducing costs on international returns.
