Managing your Classification of Dangerous Goods

In the shipping world, there is a clear classification that outlines if a shipment contains anything hazardous or dangerous. The classification of Dangerous Goods allows carriers, customs, and anyone who might interact with the shipment to have the information they need to stay safe. Dangerous Goods can only be shipped via certain carriers and shipping methods.

What is considered DG (dangerous goods)?

The regulations include specific rules for properly packaging Dangerous Goods, labeling boxes and declaring the commodities on shipping documents. Goods with these characteristics are considered dangerous (not exhaustive)

  • Radioactive
  • Flammable
  • Explosive
  • Corrosive
  • Toxic
  • Oxidizing
  • Infectious
  • Other regulated materials

Electronic equipment, perfumes and even food flavoring may be classified as Dangerous Goods. Some materials or chemicals may have characteristics that cause them to become harmful in specific circumstances. A Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) or Safety Data Sheet (SDS) from the manufacturer provides information to identify the content classification. For more information DHL has a helpful guide.
